Project Description

Sledding

Sledding is a winter sport for everyone! No matter your age or sports inclination, you can sled. There are so many ways to sled too, from organized sledding, to neighborhood sledding to extreme sledding and with sleds of all shapes and sizes, toboggans, saucers, inner tubes, sleds with runners, cafeteria trays and sometimes even snow shovels! The snow shovels don’t sound like a very good, safe idea to me, but I have seen it done!

At Sandstone Creek Club, you can sled right on our hill to the north, which is not too steep and is safe if you do it at the east end where you do not land on the driveway. (We do not allow sledding on the hill in spots where you end up on the driveway .) We have sleds at the front desk, just ask! This is a great way to sled that is easy, convenient and not too risky. It is especially good for the little ones. Snow conditions on our hill can be variable, so make sure there is enough snow there to sled before giving it a try. We ask that children be accompanied by an adult at all times when sledding on our hill.

Some neighborhood sledding spots that are popular are West Park in Eagle-Vail, Meadow Mountain at the Minturn exit (which is regulated now, as to where you are allowed to sled and you have to hike quite a way up the hill), Eagle-Vail Putting Green, Singletree Sledding Hill in Edwards and East Haystacker Sledding Hill in Eagle. Ask the front desk for directions to these sledding destinations. Here is a good article about these and other area sledding hills: https://www.insiderfamilies.com/best-vail-sledding-hills/.

For more organized sledding, take the family to Adventure Ridge Tubing Hill at the top of the mountain in Lionshead. It is a real thrill for the kids of all ages! For information on Adventure Ridge Tubing, go here: https://www.vail.com/explore-the-resort/activities-and-events/winter-activities/adventure-ridge-activities/snow-tubing.aspx. Adventure Ridge has many more winter activities as well, for more information on them please read our Adventure Ridge Activities page.

Extreme sledding is typically done in the back country and should be left to the experts. If you are at this level, you probably have your own extreme sled and know exactly how and where to go. Skibiking may be considered one form of extreme sledding though, and it can be done on Vail Mountain. Enjoy your Vail sledding experience!
